Pig Causing Mess In Orlando Neighborhood

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A wild pig is causing a mess in a neighborhood just south of downtown Orlando and residents can't get rid of it. Neighbors have set traps outside their homes off Michigan Street and I-4 near Lake Holden, but state wildlife officials won't help catch the pig.

"He's a bad pig," resident Libby Holder said.

Holder says a pig is terrorizing her neighborhood. He's been spotted ripping up yards, flowers and cooling off in the lake. Holder said, one night, the animal walked right up to her patio door and started eating her flowers.

"He was so brave, he just acted like he owned the neighborhood," she said.

There's a wooded area nearby. Residents aren't sure how he got there. The state says wild pigs typically roam between 450-470 acres, but will typically stay in one area if there is a food supply.

For the past couple of months, neighbors have set up traps but they believe he's is too smart and avoids getting caught.

"He must be an intelligent pig," Holder said. "We put all kinds of food and you would think he would go right up and eat the food and get caught."

Residents have called the city, county, and state, but they haven't been able to get help. WFTV talked to Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) and a spokesperson said, if the wild pig is on private property then it is the homeowners' responsibility.

FWC will only take care of the problem if it is on state property. The county's animal service division said it doesn't trap wild pigs, only domestic ones; the pigs don't fit in county vehicles.

In the meantime, one resident said he's not going to fix his lawn until the pig is gone.

"Guess we have to put up with it until we catch him," resident Morris Pollard said.

The residents were meeting Thursday night discuss what they can do to trap the animal. A nearby business hired Critter Control; the trapper says he will be back out Thursday to try to find the pig.
